Most guests begin their Timber Trail journey at our Ongarue base. Please check your booking confirmation before travelling, as your meeting point and required arrival time will depend on your itinerary.

Our Ongarue base is located just off State Highway 4, approximately 25 kilometres north of Taumarunui and two kilometres from Ongarue township. Secure parking and shuttle services are available from this location.

Please arrive in plenty of time for your scheduled departure as per your booking manifest.

Driving directly to Timber Trail Lodge

Most guests should travel to our Ongarue base first. Only drive directly to the Lodge when this is part of an alternative itinerary.

From the north or east, travel via Te Kūiti or Taupō to State Highway 30 and continue towards Maniaiti/Benneydale. Turn onto Waimiha Road, then Ongarue Stream Road, following the signs towards Piropiro.

From the south, travel via Taumarunui and Ongarue along Ongarue–Waimiha Road. At Waimiha, turn onto Ongarue Stream Road and follow the signs towards Piropiro.

Continue onto Kokomiko Road. The final section is unsealed, narrow and winding, so allow plenty of time and drive carefully. At Piropiro, continue through the camping area and follow the signs to Timber Trail Lodge.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Timber Trail Lodge. The lodge is completely off the grid while still being modern, comfortable and welcoming. The food was outstanding and the staff were friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend the lodge to those seeking nature and/or adventure getaways!

Great weekend doing the Timber Trail, 2 nights at the Timber Trail Lodge worked perfectly. Fantastic local knowledge and stories from Rob in the shuttle, Kia Ora Rob! Accommodation is superb, clean and comfortable rooms, great food after a good days MTB riding and a beer or 2 from the bar. Locally owned and operated with great stewardship of local environment and land. Thoroughly recommended!

Loved this place. Family of 6 adults had a ball. Everything is well organised. Rooms excellent, great food.and a pizza to keep you going after your first days riding. You do need to be fit enough to get there! Go for the full package. It’s worth it.
