Add On Activities

For those staying 3 nights

Visit Endeans Timber Mill – this was the last mill that cut native timber in the region, until the early 1980s. It’s still intact and looks like the workers just downed tools and walked off on their last day. A local will take people through the mill, and show a short video of the mill’s last days of operation. Proceeds go to the mill preservation fund.
Forgotten World Railcart 5 Tunnel Tour – Journey back in time through stunning hill country farms and native bush. Hear stories of the rail workers, as you travel the Forgotten World aboard a self-driven Rail Cart. This 3.5 hour return journey includes a stop with delicious home baking and drinks at the historic village of Matiere. Cost: $169
Whanganui River Jet Boat Lavender Run – Experience the rock-strewn rapids by Jet Boat as you take a 3 hour return tour down the majestic Whanganui River to Lauren’s Lavender Farm. Stroll through the lavender fields, enjoy the tranquility of this riverside paradise, or relax and enjoy the café and gift shop. Cost: $145
Local walks. There is a choice of local walks close to the lodge.
Local trees planting and predator pest control. Guests will be welcome to participate in our local conservation projects. We’ll have some of our own volunteers on hand to lead weed control and tree planting sessions as part of our forest regeneration efforts. Guests can also learn about and participate in our predator trapping program.

About the Timber Trail and Pureora

The Timber Trail is one of 22 Great Rides that make up Nga Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycleway. It runs through the heart of Pureora Forest Park, from Pureora Village in the north to Ongarue in the south.

Pureora Forest Park is an 88,000 hectare reserve in the central North Island, west of Taupo. It is home to the most significant remnants of North Island podocarp forest, and was the location of anti-logging protests in the 1970 and 80s which brought an end to native forest logging. Today it is home to many endangered species of native birds and mammals, reptiles and insects.
