Help Us Help The Birds
Pureora is a rare gem in the New Zealand environment and has a special place in our conservation history. It was where native forest logging was stopped due to protests by environmentalists in the 1970s. Thanks to them the Pureora Forest Park has some of the most significant remaining North Island podocarp forest remnants.
It is also home to some of the most significant populations of rare birds and invertebrates, including kokako, kaka, whio (Blue Duck), rifleman, kakariki and North Island robin.
Unfortunately, the forest is also home to a range of predators that threaten these birds. Possums, mustelids, rats and cats all thrive unless they are controlled through poisoning and trapping.
