Enjoy Your Stay at the Timber Trail Lodge

We opened in April 2017, with our first wing of nine rooms. A second wing will open in October 2017.

Deep in the centre of Aotearoa's North Island, right in the middle of nowhere, is a very special place.

That special place is the Timber Trail Lodge, designed and built to make your Pureora experience even more memorable.

Enjoy the atmosphere of informality and relaxation, whether you’re a biker or not. If you are a non-biker be assured that you will feel just as welcome and inspired by your surroundings, as those that bike the trail.

Perhaps one of the unexpected elements of your experience with us will be the sense of connection that you take away. You’ll feel connected to Pureora, and Piropiro, and with the environmental, cultural and historical values that have shaped these places. You’ll also feel connected to the people you have shared your experiences with.

Our staff are dedicated to providing you with the best possible experience at our place. Our multi-skilled lodge managers and other staff, are on hand to assist with your enquiries and ensure you receive a high level of customer service.

All around the lodge, inside and outside, are areas to relax in, chill out with friends, and to meet and chat with other guests.

The interior, especially the lounge and dining area, and the outdoor area around the lodge, have been designed to maximise sociability. There are enclosed areas with comfortable informal seating, lighting and décor arranged to initiate socialising, but also enable people to do their own thing.

Our goal is to enable groups and individuals to enjoy their own space, but at the same time mix and interact with others. Long dining tables with bench seating encourage communal dining.

Our guests will experience comfort, relaxed informality, and down-to-earth service.

The Timber Trail Lodge will eventually have two levels of accommodation. The first wing has nine guestrooms with shared toilet and shower facilities. The rooms are a mix of doubles, twins and dorms. Dorms will each have two sets of bunks (four beds total) which will be allocated on a shared basis, so unless you have four people in your group you may well be sharing with people you don’t know.

The second wing will open by October 2017. The ten ensuite bedrooms will offer a higher level of amenities with each room having a private connecting bathroom with a shower, toilet and vanity.

Guests staying in the cooler seasons will appreciate the insulated rooms that are heated by radiators.

Good food is essential for the enjoyment of a great outdoor experience, especially after a long day of physical effort.

That’s why we place great importance on providing plentiful, delicious, nutritious fare for our guests.

Soon after you arrive, famished from your efforts, you’ll be served a nutritious snack to enjoy, at your leisure, with a nice cold beer, wine or soft drink while enjoying the inspiring surroundings of the lodge.

You can help yourself to tea, coffee and filtered water at any time. We operate a small bar, serving wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks.

The evening dinner menu offers a selection that is designed to appeal to a range of tastes and dietary requirements. Our evening meals provide a generous choice of meat options, salads and vegetable dishes, served with our own homemade bread, plus a dessert.

Meals are served in the dining area, or if the weather allows, on the deck of the lodge. Seating is communal, on long tables where you are encouraged to mix with our other guests, and share stories.

We’ll set you up right for a day of biking or exploring with a breakfast including granola or other cereals, eggs and toast.

As our guest you’ll experience sustainability in practice, and leave with a greater appreciation of minimising impacts and protecting natural environments.

Our policies and practices include:

  • A composting system, for food and paper scraps, feeds our vegetable garden. You’ll enjoy some of those vegetables on our menu.
  • Recycling glass and other reusable waste.
  • Minimising packaging and unnecessary consumption of paper and plastic products.
  • Our water comes from an on-site spring, and is supplemented by rainwater from our roof. We have particle and UV filters to ensure our water is 100% pure and clean.
  • Minimising water use in showers. Water is a valuable resource and we don’t want to waste it.
  • Operating a fully biodynamic waste-water system. The cleansed water it produces is used to fertilise the plants in a dripper field below the lodge. In times of water shortage, it can be adapted to recycle fully processed water back through the toilet cisterns.
  • Our goal is to have 95% of electricity generated by solar panels within three years of opening.
  • Offsetting carbon that is emitted, through our diesel generator and water heaters, the fuel we burn in transport, and the wood-burning fireplace, by the trees we are planting, and native forest we are regenerating. We also buy carbon credits to offset any excess carbon emissions
  • Involving ourselves in local initiatives to control weeds and pests, replant areas of former plantation forestry, and protect the superb native forest in Pureora Forest Park.

You’ll learn that conservation, and the need to be careful of water and electricity use, doesn’t mean hardship or no hot showers. But it does mean having an awareness and determination to protect and enhance.

Just in case...

There’s a small provisioning store where you can stock up on snacks, spare bike tubes, a few things you may have forgotten, and a souvenir riding shirt if you wish.
